Why does the San Diego Blood Bank need financial donations in
order to achieve its mission of saving lives in the community?

As the primary supplier of blood to the majority of hospital in San Diego County, financial contributions to the San Diego Blood Bank are vital in maintaining our life saving programs and services to the community we serve.

The San Diego Blood Bank operated on less than a 1% margin over the past five years. The outside costs blood banks must pay for testing and equipment are escalating.  Blood banks are struggling to maintain supply in the face of increasing demand and increasing costs. In FY '07 we were undercompensated by $1.3 million for red blood cells alone, the primary product we provide to hospital each year.
