New, permanent Clairemont Mesa Donor Center welcomes blood donors in Clairemont Town Square, supporting local hospitals.
Bringing more blood donation opportunities to Clairemont began in 2023 with a temporary, “pop-up” donation location at the Clairemont Town Square shopping center. This site proved to be a perfect spot for San Diego blood donors to call home. By November 19, 2024, we opened our doors to this permanent location in the very same shopping center.
In January 2025, during National Blood Donor Month and in our 75th Year of Saving Lives, San Diego Blood Bank is proud to celebrate the grand opening of the Clairemont Mesa donation location.
Thanks to generous individual charitable donations and corporate sponsors the Clairemont location is equipped with a research lab and capacity to collect blood from 8-10 donors at a time as it is the second-largest location in San Diego County.
Financial supporters provided critical funding for apheresis machines to collect platelets, plasma, and double reds, blood collection HemoFlows for efficiency, comfortable donor beds, and more.
Special thank you to the Walter J. and Betty C. Zable Foundation, The Hervey Family Fund, Sycuan Casino Resort, Maurice J. Masserini Charitable Trust, Barona Resort & Casino, Charles and Ruth Billingsley Foundation, and Antibody Design Laboratories, MyPoint Credit Union, and Platt/Whitelaw Architects, Inc., and individual financial supporters for your generous support of this new location that will save more lives.
Since 2020, this is the fourth permanent San Diego Blood Bank location to open including the Liberty Station Donor Center in Point Loma, Chula Vista Donor Center in Terra Nova Plaza, and the Irvine Business District Donor Center operating as Southern California Blood Bank in Orange County.
Grand Opening and Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony for San Diego Blood Bank Clairemont Mesa
On January 15, 2025, our community gathered to celebrate the grand opening of San Diego Blood Bank Clairemont Mesa with a ribbon-cutting ceremony that also revealed a beautiful mural completed by local artist, Hanna Daly. The mural displays an important message, “Keep Life Flowing…Give blood. Save Lives” with colorful, San Diego ocean waves and palm trees.
CEO Douglas Morton shared gratitude and passion for the support of the Blood Bank’s growth and lasting legacy of saving lives in partnership with the community over 75 years. Clairemont Mesa Manager, Rayan thanked staff, friends, and family for supporting this big journey and for helping her and her team do what they love and “save lives together.” Dr. Denise Maliki of Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego reflected on the incredible impact blood donors make for local patients and their families.
Team Survivor Mercedes recalled her tumultuous leukemia journey for which the blood bank aided in her treatment and recovery with blood and platelets. 15-year-old blood recipient and Crohn’s Disease warrior, Mason, reminded everyone in the room the importance of volunteer blood donation and the incredible difference it makes to patients and kids like him.
Assemblymember Chris Ward’s office presented a Certificate of Recognition and Councilwoman Dr. Jennifer Campbell of District 2 presented Douglas with an official commendation. Together they joined Mason, Mercedes, Center Manager, Rayan, CEO Douglas Morton, and supporters in cutting the ceremonial red ribbon, marking the beginning of a new chapter in our mission to save lives through blood donation.
We look forward to welcoming the community at our new Clairemont Mesa location!
